FAQs about Processing Professional Indemnity Insurance for Digital Professions
Of course, because for us the Internet is only a means to an end and simplifies our processes, for example when submitting your questionnaire. This gives us at exali.com the time to concentrate on what is really important in our work: We will be happy to answer your questions professionally and in detail in English in a personal meeting and support you in handling claims.
We would be happy to guide you through the exali.com online questionnaire by phone and help you clarify any questions that may arise.
We usually do not. We see ourselves as specialists and not as generalists. So area-wide sales service does not make sense for us. However, our insurance experts are always available for a detailed and professional telephone call in English or can answer your questions by email. You won’t end up in an anonymous call centre when you call us!
By doing without a time-consuming and cost-intensive national sales team, our insurance experts have the opportunity to conduct detailed research and compare the professional and general indemnity insurance policies available on the market for you.
This in turn has very specific advantages for you as an exali.com customer: Because we know where there is a problem and what is required, what ultimately makes sense and what is risky, we are able to develop and offer the right professional and public indemnity insurance for our independent and freelance customers in the fields of IT & engineering, media and consulting.
We put a lot of energy and all of our know-how into this, which is ultimately our strength: Over 13.000 customers trust our judgment, products and technical support today.

If you have submitted your credit card information and the questionnaire and have not answered any of the questions with “Yes”, your insurance contract is active. You can now log into your “My exali” customer area and view and download your documents, such as the policy and the signed premium invoice.
If you answered “Yes” to certain application questions, an exali.com employee will contact you and clarify the open points with you.
Yes, as soon as you get to the online questionnaire at exali.com or log into the “My exali” customer area, the connection is SSL-encrypted.
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption technology is the global standard for web security to prevent unauthorised access to confidential information, data manipulation, data theft, phishing and other forms of online fraud. This means that only authorised recipients – i.e. you yourself – can read the information.
For every insurance contract, there are certain “rules of conduct” (also called obligations) that impose certain duties on the policyholder (e.g. when submitting an application). You must take these obligations very seriously, as breaching them can, in extreme cases, result in you losing your insurance coverage.
Obligations come in the form of legal obligations, which are regulated in the German Insurance Contract Act (Versicherungsvertragsgesetz), and contractual obligations which arise from the terms and conditions of your insurance contract.
Obligations upon Conclusion of the Contract
The insurer relies on the information you provide before conclusion of contract in order to conduct an appropriate risk assessment. The Insurance Contract Act and the Insurance terms and conditions therefore stipulate that you answer the questions asked in the online application correctly and in full.
Consequences of Non-compliance with Obligations upon Conclusion of Contract
In the event of a violation of the obligation to report circumstances relevant to the risk (e.g. incorrect or incomplete answers in the online application), the insurer can withdraw from the contract and, in the event of a claim, be wholly or partially exempt from payment. The policyholder’s reporting obligations and the legal consequences of them violating these also apply to co-insured parties.
The insurance policy for professional indemnity insurance is created online by exali.com and made available as a download in your SSL-protected customer area “My exali”. The first signed premium invoice, your questionnaire, the insurance conditions and all mandatory customer information are stored in PDF format in the “My exali” customer area. You will also be able to manage your master data simply and easily in the future in the “My exali” customer area.
The following services are also available in the service area:
- Create insurance confirmation in English.
- Use the upgrade function to adjust the insurance coverage at any time.
- Add Liability Seal and maintain profile page.
- In principle, any company, expert or service provider can apply for professional indemnity insurance.
- The legal form (e.g. foundation, limited, SE, sole proprietorship) does not matter.
- However, the applicant’s place of residence or business must be in a country in which we can offer our professional indemnity insurance.
If you set the expiry or extension date in the online questionnaire for January 1st, there are two advantages:
1. The invoice for the insurance premium corresponds to the financial year (if your financial year = calendar year). This means that you have no accrual problems in accounting (especially with corporations).
2. If you start the professional indemnity insurance contract in the current year, you initially only pay a pro-rated initial premium, from the desired start of insurance until January 1st of the following year. This can be particularly beneficial for entrepreneurs and start-ups.
The minimum term of the contract is generally 12 months. If your professional indemnity insurance begins during the year, the remaining term until the end of the year is less than 12 months. Therefore, the first term of the newly concluded contract is extended to 1 January of the next year. In the first year, the premium is only calculated proportionally. In the following year, the entire annual fee is charged at the beginning of January.
Example:
- Questionnaire and start of the policy: 16/08/2021
- Expiry or extension date of 1 January. The time of the regular premium due date, but also the time of the contract expiry is set here.
- Since the current year 2021 is only 4 months and 2 weeks and is therefore below the minimum contract term (= 12 months), the contract expires on 1 January 2023. The insurance expires on 1 January 2023, i.e. the first contract term is 16 months and 2 weeks.
- The first ordinary termination option is with one month’s notice to the end of the second calendar year (1 January 2023). If the contract is not terminated, it is tacitly extended for another year.
If you answer No to all questions in the exali.com online application and authorise payment by credit card, you will be covered immediately for professional indemnity.
This means that you can be insured from midnight on your selected start date (including Saturday or Sunday). In the online application, you can choose to backdate your policy up to 3 months or select a start date up to 12 months in the future.
Premiums for professional indemnity insurance are paid by credit card.
Depending on whether you choose 12-month insurance or set the insurance expiry or extension date as 1 January of each year during the online application process, your initial premium is either a full annual premium (for 12 months) or the initial pro rata premium based on the difference between your desired start of insurance and 1 January of the following year.
No. Payment of premiums for professional indemnity insurance is made using a credit card.
The premium for the professional indemnity insurance will be charged directly to your specified credit card when you take out the insurance.
Subsequent Premiums
Subsequent premiums will be charged no earlier than on the 3rd of the first month of the new contract period.
Example: Renewal until 1 March 2021 ⇒ Your premium will be charged no earlier than on 3 March 2021.
No, currently, we only allow annual payments. However, if you set your insurance to expire on 1 January during the online application, only the pro-rata annual premium from the start of your insurance until 31 December of the corresponding year is due for the first current insurance year. This is particularly beneficial for people starting a business who are setting up during a current year.
If you answer YES to any of the questions in the professional indemnity insurance application, one of our insurance experts will contact you and we will clarify any outstanding issue(s) with you within 48 hours. After clarification, your online policy is issued by exali.com.
Yes, however, in this case exali.com’s online terms and conditions, as shown on the exali.com website, do not apply. We will provide you with a personal quote.
If you specify annual net turnover of “above € 3.000.000” in the first step of the online application, an exali.com expert will contact you within one working day to clarify briefly which risk questionnaire best reflects your business model.
Based on this risk questionnaire, we will be happy to prepare a personal quote tailored to your needs.
Right of Cancellation
You can cancel your contract within 30 days in writing (e.g. letter, fax, e-mail) without giving a reason. This ‘cooling-off’ period begins on the day after you have received your insurance policy, contract provisions including general insurance conditions and contractual information, and this instruction in writing. In order to satisfy this cancellation deadline, it is sufficient that you send your notice of cancellation within the cooling-off period.
Your notice of cancellation can be e-mailed to info@exali.com. Alternatively, you can send your notice of cancellation directly to the insurer, Markel Insurance SE, Sophienstrasse 26, 80333 Munich, Germany. In the event of cancellation by fax, your notice of cancellation must be sent to the following fax number: +49 (0) 89 8908 316 - 99. In the event of cancellation by e-mail, your notice of cancellation must be sent to the following e-mail address: info@markel.de
Consequences of Cancellation
Markel may withhold that part of your premium that is due up until receipt of notice of cancellation if you have agreed that your insurance coverage will begin before the cooling-off period has expired. If you have not given such consent or if your insurance coverage does not begin until the cooling-off period has expired, then payments received by both parties must be refunded. Markel will refund your premiums immediately, and no later than 30 days after receipt of notice of cancellation.
Important Information
Your right of cancellation is excluded if the contract has been executed by both parties in full at your explicit request before you have exercised your right of cancellation.
